Visiting Carlingnose point pier, Forth estuary.

After years of looking at this pier online it was time to visit it. Was a great morning at North Queensferry.

This pier was used during the wars and is slowly dissapearing, more info can be found below.

On top of the Forth rail bridge!

Thanks to Barnado’s children charity we were able to buy tickets to go up the Forth rail bridge and see the world from 110meter up. It was a quick 30min experience but so worth it, I hope they will be doing this again.  I know there is talks about making a tourist attraction on top of the Forth rail bridge, I hope this goes ahead.

YouTube channel started, Queensferry crossing video.

Finally gave in and started a YouTube channel, still work in progress and I guess like my photograph with time and experience it will get better. I’m not a person that likes to be recorded so I will have to think of a way I will do this without getting myself caught or heard on camera. I have a few good ideas already and I have a friend who is very good with project planning and storyboards, so we’ll see what happens.

Anyway here’s a short video of images captured while walking over the new Forth Queensferry crossing which opens today for traffic.

Always look both ways when taking photos

I was taking photos of the Forth road bridge and didn’t take make notice of the Forth rail bridge. It’s been taken to death BUT when I turned around I got this image.

I loaded it up on Viewbug and got into that month’s featured photos.
My best results so far on a single image. 50 peer awards and 120 likes as well as having 6 Photo Trifecta awards.

The actual image I was there for that night was this one.
I took a walk on top of the road brigde to see the sunset and new bridge.

North Queensferry revisit

Doesn’t matter how many times you visit the same site you are surprised by the different results you get.

Winter night wander out to break cabin fever

Cabin fever has been setting in and I had to get out for some photos. I had 4 places in mind but we ended restricted time wise as we only got out at 8pm.

First off to Linlithgow palace. Did a bit of research to see where the moon would come up and where to park. Off we went and of course the weather is currently foul. We were lucky to get a gap in the rain but the clouds killed any chance of the moon coming out for a peek. Went for a walk around the water and looked for a space between the trees to get the tripods set up. Eventually got a spot where the trees has fallen into the water. It made for a nice foreground interest for the photo. After that we walked around to get some lights reflecting in the water.

 An airplane came over so that was a nice add on.

After all that we went looking for the Forth and Blackness castle. I have been trying to get my steelwool kit
set up and last night was the test night. I had a few ideas and did two photos of light play with lit steelwool.

Autumn sunrise at the Forth

Went to get some sunrise photos this morning at North Queensferry. Learnt how to use bracketing at the end of the session. Good results in the end.

Halloween light trail special

As Halloween will be here shortly we went hunting for the elusive ghost train.

A bit of long exposure light play at the trains station at South Queensferry. It’s a learning curve and we went out experimenting on Friday night.

So we stood at the end of platform 2 facing the Forth rail bridge and as trains went past tried to get the light trails working. After a struggle we eventually got some good shots.

Then it was onto trying to shoot the end of the train as it’s stationary and moving away. The only problem with this is the delay between trains arriving at the platforms. 15-20min wait and then a single photo. I have eventually decided to get my 2nd (my back up camera, I replaced the Canon 1D MKIII with another 7D) Canon 7D involved to increase the possibilities of some good shots. I had to use a camera backpack as a make shift tripod but will invest in another tripod for the future, I might even need another lens as the wide angle is a bit to short at times.

And then moving to the back of each train working out how long to start the exposure before the train moves away to get
the illusion of transparency while having enough detail to see that it is a train.

Taking a walk under the blue moon

Beginning of August there was a blue moon and I thought I might as well try and capture it. I planned a walk down the Forth to take a few photos at sunset of the Forth bridges.

I walked a good distance and came to a point I could see Crammond island and it’s WW2 submarine defenses in the near distance. While I was taking the photos of the ship moored I looked around to see a huge moon rising. Almost totally missed as I expected it to rise 2 hours later. The size of the moon as it rises is by far the best due to the atmosphere and the way light plays tricks on our eyes.

To be honest the moon photos are nothing to write home about but it did give me a glimpse into the possibility of better photos in the future. As long as I plan it better of course.

I visited North Queensferry for a last attempt to get a nice moon lit photo. I think this one made it worth while.
